- Science Spectacular, The Jolley Way -
- The Jolley Way Chemistry "Magic" Demonstrations - I continue my efforts to expose and educate K-12 students with the possibilities that the sciences can offer them. I have an hour long "chemistry magic show" that is either just a show or is easily adapted to include hands on experience for smaller groups. I have groups that groups that come to the university yearly and I routinely visit five to ten K-12 schools per year.
- Shelley School District (1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade) STEM teacher - I regularly go into the schools to teach science, including crime scene investigation projects that encourage critical thinking. Shelley School District School Board, Trustee July 2013 - July 2017)
Hobbies
- Science - I have been teaching general and organic chemistry, almost exclusively on the Idaho Falls campus, since 2000. I have a long record of commitment to scientific education not only at Idaho State University but also in the community. My teaching style is one of enthusiasm as I introduce chemistry using the five E’s: Engage, Explain, Explore, Elaborate and Evaluate. Topics are always revisited to optimize understanding and application and my laboratories are designed to complement the lecture material. I actively encourages her collegiate students to pass what they have learned on to younger generations and I have created, organized and hosted a science expo for local students called the Science Spectacular-the Jolley Way. It was started in 2016 on the Idaho State University, Idaho Falls extension campus, and includes 600 to 700 4th and 5th grade students from local schools. In includes hands on booths in chemistry, biology, geology, physics, robotics, engineering, technology and math. The event is a true learning experience not only for the K-12 students but also the ISU students as they explain the fundamental concepts behind the experiments. I also regularly volunteer to teach science in K-5 classrooms and at community events. My chemistry “magic show” has been seen by thousands of students across southeastern Idaho over the past 20+ years. I believe that the spark of interest has to be ignited at a young age so that the commitment to continue into the challenging STEM fields is strong.
- Animals - The national 4H program with it’s pledge of using Heads for clearer thinking, Hearts for greater loyalty, Hands for larger service and Health for better living for the club, community country and the world is everything that I would like to contribute to. I have been an active volunteer since 2012 and advise between 3-40 youth, ages 6-18, on projects in the livestock area. This includes between 15-30 teaching events throughout the year that focus on showmanship skills for both the animal and 4H member, leadership skills, demonstration skills, public speaking, record keeping, accounting, safe animal handling and care practices, knowledge of animal health, anatomy, physiology, national organizational data and breed standards. In the fall of each year, I get the opportunity to attend county and state fair events with my members where they are judged on each of these areas of knowledge and skill.
- Plants - I love anything that grows and enjoy planting a garden each year. The inside of my house also looks like a tropical rain forest.
Why I Became Involved with SSA
I believe it takes a village to raise a child and I am forever grateful to all the family, friends, teachers and advisors that have helped with my own children. The SSA encourages the community to support the ideals and skills required to produce, positive, responsible citizens. Being a member allows me to do my part in helping out that process. I am happy to be associated with their endeavors.
