Why I Became Involved with the SSA

I believe art brings the finishing touches to any community. Shelley has many talented people and sharing their art brings all of us closer together.

The artwork and cultural experiences we have enjoyed   in the different places we’ve lived and traveled has been life-changing. I   would like residents and visitors alike to love what they see and feel here   in Shelley. The feeling we all get from the culture we create through those finishing touches is what Shelley Supporters of the Arts is all about.

Why I became involved in the SSA

I believe that a community committed to the arts is a community committed to service, education, and acceptance.  I am devoted to working towards providing the essential resources necessary to highlight and embolden those seeking to improve Shelley Idaho and the supporting areas through creative expression. Whether it be by participation, or support of local artists, collaboration with the Shelley Supporters of the Arts is an excellent way to make a difference for the better in our community.

Hobbies:

I was born and raised in the small Eastern Idaho town of Shelley, so I enjoy the beauty in the surrounding area, including the mountains, rivers, and   short hikes where I can see the wildflowers. I love to read, mostly fiction,   although I do have some non-fiction as well. I love to spend time with my family and having 7 siblings gets a little hectic at times, but it’s so much fun   getting together for an activity. And I occasionally dabble in the Arts. I   have participated in ballroom dance, art classes, and more recently,   performed in multiple productions at The Virginia Theater located in Shelley,   ID. Some of my favorites include: “Pirates of Penzance”, “Midsummer Nights’ Dream”, and “A Christmas Carol.” I have also learned to run lights and sound for productions as well as been a Co-Director for the 2017 production of “A Christmas Carol.” Watching a production come together with lights, music, props, set, and cast, gave me such a feeling of satisfaction.

Why SSA?

While I did participate in some sports, volleyball and tennis being my favorite, it was never such a big draw for me. Ever since I was little I loved to sing. I remember watching musicals with my family and ballets with my mother. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was always a treasure, especially the barn dance. I  appreciate all forms of art, since it is always exciting to see others   display their talents, as well as see the youth flourish when they are able   to grow and develop a talent that they didn’t realize they possessed. And I   think it is influential for those children have opportunities to participate in those activities that promote the arts, as there are some children, who   like me, don’t feel like competing in sports. Give customers a reason to do business with you.

HOBBIES I’m an outdoor enthusiast! I love to hunt, fish, camp, hike and ride our dirt bikes and 4-wheelers. *Music is a passion of mine. I have played the guitar since the age of 6. I have a guitar for every genera. I have a classical guitar, an electric for Rock, an acoustic electric for both Rock & Country, an acoustic I don’t touch (my Great Grandfather gave it to my mother), and a 12 string just for kicks. Art is a broad word and is close to my heart. I love to draw, paint, sculpt, burn, carve and craft. My husband, however, is not thrilled because first I took over the “Man Cave” and now I’m taking over the garage with all my new power tools (I’m learning to use the scroll saw). I love the feeling of accomplishment these things give me. Sports, my parents made sure all of us were always involved in some sort of sport. I played tennis, volleyball,

Well, I think you would still call me (at least people born before the millennium) just a big "Tom Boy". I like to FISH, hunt, camp, play with fire & power tools, etc. I'm up for just about anything at least once.
When I was a kid I came home from school & finished that work up first, then chores, then you got to take your pick for the season; Sports- basketball, volleyball (mom wouldn't let me play football), and then there was Softball! I couldn't run, so thank goodness I could hit.  I coached for my nieces and daughter, but they all eventually aged out on me. I recently just have all my equipment to a young mom about to take on the same adventure. That makes me feel a little better at least.
Music- thought at 6yrs old the guitar sounded awesome! I was going to be a star.  They bought me a classical guitar....I HATED IT! I didn't touch that thing again after a year of playing until JR High. Then I figured out the beginnings of that Rock thing. I hadn't really picked it up for the last few years and it's truly amazing what stays and what doesn't. KEEP PRACTICING!
Art- starting out young at just little Rec Center Art classes learning how to draw shapes or using charcoal. Shading, still not sure I have that one down, but the point is my parents had us out there and busy and didn't just let us quit everything. I got into some different mediums in the upper years of school & finally that last year the teacher pulled 5-6 of us aside who had never missed a class trimester and confessed we had gone through everything plus some. He didn't know what to do with us.
Thinking back, that makes me laugh. Some of the best times I ever had and greatest lessons learned or that could be applied to my daily life were in those classes for the arts. All of these things helped make me a hard-working, well rounded, civic-minded, loving individual.
My hobbies now.... well I dabble a bit in everything from leather, to custom engraved butcher block/ reversible counter tops, to a simple burnt Jesus.

WHY I BECAME INVOLVED IN THE SSA I may not have grown up in Shelley, but I’ve always had strong ties to this community. My grandmother lived here, and this is where we spent a lot of time swimming at the pool, playing at the park, going to Spud Day or an Easter Egg hunt and let’s not forget the Virginia Theater. (I even watched as the old high school burned to the ground). In 2016 we bought my grandmother’s house across from what is now Sunrise Elementary.  My goal is to help bring the arts back and to make sure they are well funded.
